Herbert's agent promptly sold the hardcover rights to Doubleday, allowing Herbert to get out from under several debts. In 1955, Herbert completed his first novel, Under Pressure, and submitted it to John W. Finding a job as a speech writer for a California senator, he worked in Washington, D.C., where he developed a wariness of politicians, but was introduced to a variety of issues, ranging from limited governmental spending to environmentalism.
